An away day for the top four
We’ve sixth v first and fifth v fourth on our South Central Saturday. Here’s our preview of the action
Leaders Farnham Town take a six point advantage on the road to sixth place Hanworth Villa. With only two defeats all season, Town have scored more goals- seventy one- than anyone else in the Division, and conceded fewer, and have been particularly good on the road, winning twelve of their thirteen matches. The Villains are rather difficult to defeat on their own patch, and are looking to extend their unbeaten run to four matches- and their winning run to three. Only a point outside the top five, they certainly have an incentive- and, of course, they defeated the leaders on their own patch this season, a one-nil win on November 30th making them currently the only member of a particularly exclusive club.
Second place Kingstonian hit five on Wednesday night, and have only two defeats from ten, but with a six point gap between themselves and the leaders nothing less than three points will do as they travel to face South Park Reigate. The Sparks have gone six without a win, but draws in their last two have suggested they are climbing out of their slump- and with only a point between themselves and the bottom four they won’t be short of incentive. They are looking to complete a double, after defeating the K’s one-nil in November.
Third place Ascot United saw a twelve match unbeaten run come to an end last weekend, and the Yellas will want to start another as they head to Rayners Lane. United’s away record- 7-3-3- matches their opponents home record, and Lane have been very good on occasions, particularly on their own patch. They do only have two wins from ten, however, and lost three-one at the Racecourse ground earlier this season.
Perhaps our match of the day has fifth place Hartley Wintney hosting Uxbridge, the visitors one place and three points above The Row having played a game more. Uxbridge are three without a win- although they did draw two of those- whilst Hartley came from behind to win at Raynes Park Vale on Tuesday night, their first win in three. Uxbridge have been very good at home, but the Row hammered them four-nil at Honeycroft in November.
Hayes and Yeading United, two points away from the top five, travel to Raynes Park Vale, who are two points and two places worse off. United hope to extend their unbeaten run to five matches- and perhaps to climb back into a play off place; whilst Vale saw their own five match unbeaten run come to an end against Hartley Wintney in midweek. The first meeting between the sides this season saw United hammer their opponents four-one.
Moneyfields are in superb form, and the Portsmouth side are looking for an eighth successive victory as they welcome Guernsey for a match that kicks off at 2PM. The Moneys have been climbing the table at a rate of knots, and are only three points from the play off places, whilst the Green Lions are inside the bottom four- but only goal difference is keeping them there. They saw a four match unbeaten run come crashing to an end as they were hit for five on Tuesday evening, Ashford Town the victors.
What a match we had when these two sides met in the Channel Islands earlier this season, a goal seven minutes into added time seeing the Moneys win five-four!
Harrow Borough welcome Cup giant killers Binfield. Borough, in tenth, have gone four games without a win- although they have drawn three of them- whilst the Moles, who knocked a second Premier Division side out of the Velocity Cup in midweek to reach the Semi-Finals, have won two and lost two of their last four in the league but were narrow winners over Met Police last weekend. They are in fifteenth, ten points behind their hosts, but seven points clear of the bottom four. The sides have already met twice this season, the Moles winning four-three in the League, and two-nil in the Velocity Cup a week before Christmas.
Leatherhead take on Met Police. The Tanners are eleventh, ten points away from the top five, but are looking to take their unbeaten run to six matches- whilst their opponents have lost four in a row and are outside the bottom four only by the skin of their teeth- indeed only by a one goal margin. Leatherhead have won the last seven meetings between the sides, the last of those victories a two-nil success at Imber Court in November.
Southall haven’t really got going this season despite playing some nice football. The All are down in thirteenth, and they welcome struggling Sutton Common Rovers, the visitors second from bottom and two points from safety after losing their last four matches, albeit each of them narrowly. Southall have gone five without a win, so both sides are rather desperate for three points- but Rovers will also have revenge on their minds after falling to a five-nil defeat when the sides last met.
Westfield, in fourteenth, host bottom side Badshot Lea. Field have slipped to fourteenth after an eight match winless run, whilst the Baggies have won only twice all season and are nine points from safety, but have looked improved and will have boosted their confidence no end by hammering Ashford Town six-three last weekend. One of those two Baggies wins actually came against Westfield, a two-one win seven weeks or so ago.
Sunday sees Ashford Town welcome Horndean. The Tangerines left a three match losing run behind them by hammering Guernsey five-nil in midweek, and only goal difference is now keeping them in the bottom four. The Deans are four places and five points better off, but have gone six matches without a win and will want to do better than in the goalless draw between the sides the last time they met.
