Clean Sweep Cup Sunday

Three of our sides were in FA Cup action yesterday- and all were triumphant

It was a first competitive match of the season for Cambridge City, Grays Athletic and Littlehampton Town yesterday- and each of our trio were triumphant in front of their own fans.

City, playing in St Ives whilst they await the go-ahead to use their new stadium, took on Lakenheath, and after the visitors put up some initial resistance they were swept aside after the break. Aaron Greene put City ahead on sixteen minutes, and they were two up just before the break, Giani Ashley doubling the score. Lakenheath got a goal back just after the restart, but on fifty six minutes Greene grabbed another to restore the two goal cushion and from then onwards it was a one horse race, a George Smith double making it five-one.

Athletic, back at Tilbury this season whilst they work to get their new ground ready for use, fell behind against Hullbridge Sports in the early stages, but equalised on twenty minutes, went ahead six minutes later, and added three more in the second half for a five-one win. Elliott Sartorius got their opener, Alejandro Machada got the second- and the fourth, on seventy three minutes, whilst Bobby Unwin just after half time and Matas Skarna a minute from time contributed the others.

The Golds of Littlehampton Town had a tougher task against a famous former Isthmian name, Tooting & Mitcham United, but they came through courtesy of an early goal from Alex Laing, who took only eight minutes to break the deadlock. The visiting Terrors didn’t give up, but there was no way back, and they ended with ten men after a late red card.
