Greens return to winning ways- as Grays fail to return to the top five
Gorleston end their losing run with victory over Grays Athletic
Our Wednesday night football consisted of just one match, and it came from the east coast as Gorleston welcomed Grays Athletic to Great Yarmouth. The Greens had lost their way a little, losing three in a row, whilst Athletic knew that victory wouldn’t just lift them into the top five, it would send them above landlords Tilbury into fourth place.
Sadly for the travelling faithful, the Greens dominated the first half. On eighteen minutes a goal from Lewis Johnson, his second of the season, put them ahead- a fine finish from the edge of the box after Athletic had the chance to clear a long throw but failed to do so. On the half hour it was two-nil, a fabulous shot from Zach Dronfield from about the same position as Johnson’s first. Athletic fought for a way back into the match, and they did get a goal, Alejandro Machado heading home from a corner- but by then we’d played five minutes of added time, and it was too little, too late.
Gorleston climb to fourteenth, whilst Athletic stay sixth, a point away from fifth place but with a game in hand over the side currently occupying it, Waltham Abbey.
