Isthmian Supporters Predictions 23-24: Canvey Island

Jonathan gives us a Gulls eye view

We asked supporters of our Pitching In Isthmian League clubs to preview the new season, reflect on the old and predict the final outcome. Their predicted 1-22 will be worked into a final table which you will see just before the big kick off.

We’re back in Canvey with Jonathan Andrews

  1. Thinking about last season, what were your highlights?

The derby double doubles were most definitely the standout! We’d been waiting to get one over on Concord Rangers for the best part of 10 years, so to beat them home and away was brilliant. Doing the same to Billericay Town was even more unexpected, but all the more welcome! Winning at their place in particular was probably the zenith of our season.

2. And what was the worst moment?

Most of us will likely admit there were more lows than highs last year. The second half collapse away at Wingate & Finchley still leaves a sour taste to this day. The chequered, inconsistent form and injury crisis around Christmas onwards saw a few painful calamities too. We all breathed a sigh of relief when safety was confirmed.

3. Which member of your squad was your Player of the Season - and why?

It has to be Bradley Sach. With the loss of Evans Kouassi to injury for much of the season, he really stepped up to lead the line. Some of his goals were absolutely vital, and he’ll always be held in high regard here as a result.

Other senior players in the side like Jamie Salmon, Conor Hubble and Elliott Ronto deserve a mention as well. Their experience really helped drag us out of the mud at times!

4. Moving on to your current squad- which players do you think will make a big impact during the 24-25 campaign?

We’ve made some good additions to the team over the summer. The return of Bobby Mason and the confidence he brings can’t be undersold. Kane Gilbert seems to have really matured as a player since he last was with us and could grab a few goals this year. Finlay Dorrell looks a real talent too for such a young man.

5. Realistically, how do you think you’ll do this season?

A decent preseason has left a few of us quietly confident. However, I think it could hinge on the squad staying fit again. We’ve always notoriously had one of the smallest squads in the division, which proved to our detriment last year.

Aiming for the playoffs this season would be a big ask in a league with some big names on even bigger budgets! But I think we have enough quality to avoid the drop should the squad stay fit. I’m going to be positive and say upper mid table – anything above that is a welcome bonus!

6. Which matches are you most looking forward to going to- and why?

Chichester away on the opening weekend will be a class day out. It’s a ground I’ve never been too either, so will be good to tick it off. Dartford and Dover will be standouts as well, with both being big clubs at this level. The derbies against Billericay, too, are always hotly anticipated.

7. What is your favourite Isthmian away ground?

I think Lewes still holds the crown for me. It’s a cracking day out and the set up there is brilliant. Dulwich, Whitehawk and Hastings all get honourable mentions.

8. If you regularly travelled away, which ground served the best food?

Horsham takes this one by a country mile. If you haven’t tried the food there, do it. It’s a real highlight.

9. Who do you think will finish in the top five?

Chatham Town, Billericay Town, Folkestone Invicta, Dulwich Hamlet, Dartford

Thank you- now, who’s next? If you’d like to represent your club please send an email to Ian at [email protected] and we’ll send you the questions.
