Late Blues leave the Millers empty handed
Wingate and Finchley strike late to win a seven goal thriller at Parkside
Aveley boss Brett Munyard has a reputation for being refreshingly frank in defeat and in victory, and on Saturday, after his Millers lost their second home League match in a row, he explained that seven league games wouldn’t define their season. He added:
‘How we learn, improve and respond will. We’ve set high standards, and that makes days like today particularly tough. The team we are in September won’t be the team we are in May.’
They had the chance to show a response last night as they welcomed a Wingate & Finchley side who had happy memories of Parkside; but it ended up being ‘particularly tough’ once more. The Blues had not managed to defeat the Millers in four attempts, but their last visit to Aveley had come not in the League but in the Velocity Cup Final in May, and that had seen them lift the trophy- so this was a return to a happy hunting ground for the North Londoners, and they were soon happy once more.
On fourteen minutes newly arrived Scott Kashket followed his debut goal against Welling United on Saturday by putting his side ahead, however the hosts were soon level, Toby Aromolaran responding after good work from Chris Harris. Kashket, however, had the next word, curling the ball home six minutes before the break to give the visitors a half time lead.
Early in the second half it got worse for the hosts, another new Blue arrival, David Oupoh, extending the visitors lead- but that sparked the Millers firmly into life and within fifteen minutes they were level, George Saunders firing home a free kick and Malachi Napa finding the net after more good work from Saunders.
That looked to be that, but a red card for Chris Harris with twenty minutes to go gave the visitors a boost, and they took advantage right at the end. A succession of added time crosses, a fine save from Charlie Turner, but there was Oupoh following up to win the match for the visitors, three-four the final score.
The Blues leapfrog their hosts into tenth place.
