Brickies slay their fifth giant of the season!
Hashtag United and Brentwood Town fought valiantly without success in the Trophy, but Sittingbourne took the plaudits - National League South Enfield Town their latest victims
Brentwood Town, who had just picked up our Performance of the Month award for their win at Hereford in the last round, had even bigger fish- well, shrimp- to fry as Southend United made the trip to the Arena. The Blues started superbly, Daniel Ogunleye opening the scoring on eleven minutes, but United quickly drew level, and we reached the halfway mark at one-one. The visitors then took control, making it four-one by the time we reached the sixty sixth minute, but the Blues weren’t done and Ogunleye got a goal back with fifteen minutes remaining. In added time the visitors added a fifth, but there was still time for Harry Elsey to score again for Town, three-five the final score.
Hashtag United hit the road to National League South side Hampton & Richmond Borough. The Tags were in fine form, one defeat in nine in all competitions, and defeated National League North promotion chasers Brackley Town in the last round- whilst their hosts were having a mixed campaign, but had only lost one of their previous five and went ahead in this one six minutes into the second half. Twelve minutes from time it was two-nil, and the Beavers added a third just before the end.
Sittingbourne, who had already completed four giant killings this season (two of them over Dover Athletic), faced a rather familiar ‘giant’ as Enfield Town made the trip to Woodstock Park. The Towners have had a difficult start to their first National League South season, and sit at the bottom of the table eight points from safety. They’d particularly struggled on the road, whilst the Brickies had made their home a fortress, winning every league match they’ve played there this season- so perhaps the opening goal shouldn’t have come as a surprise, but it took only five minutes to arrive, Henry Sinai the scorer. The Towners were quickly level, however- indeed it took only four minutes before Jake Hutchinson levelled- and with twenty minutes on the clock completed the turnaround, Sam Youngs giving them the lead. The Brickies weren’t going to sit back and accept that, and on twenty six minutes Joe Boachie struck to make it two-two, before adding another to make it three-two just five minutes later! Within four minutes it was four-two, an own goal adding to the Brickies tally, and what they had, they held, to take another famous scalp. Many congratulations to the Brickies- again!
Horsham’s long trip to the English Riviera to take on Torquay United has been rearranged for Tuesday.
