Comeback kings Bury hold on at the summit

Bury Town, Witham Town and Felixstowe were all victorious in our promotion race- whilst Tilbury slay a giant!

Leaders Bury Town travelled to Haringey Borough looking for a sixth consecutive unbeaten away match- but for much of the game it didn’t look like they would get it. Borough went ahead on five minutes, Caleb Dennis the scorer, but we were level at the break, Ryan Jollard with the equaliser twelve minutes before half time. The hosts then took control, Jorge Djassi-Sambu and Matt Young making it two and three-one on fifty one and fifty eight minutes- but as this season has shown, a lead is never safe if you are Haringey Borough, and their fans probably watched the rest of the match from between their fingers in anticipation of what was coming.

With twenty one minutes remaining Bury got a goal back, Ethan Mayhew bringing it back to three-two, and just two minutes later Max Maughn got an equaliser. Could Borough hold on for one point? Sadly for the home faithful, the answer, as it has been so regularly this season, was no- as two minutes from time Luke Brown got a winner for the visitors, who remain a point clear at the top.

Witham Town, in second place, travelled to take on Ipswich Wanderers- and for much of the night, with Bury behind, it looked as if they’d hit the summit. Goals on twenty five and thirty minutes from Archie McFadden and Kamani Mcfarlane gave them a two-nil lead, and it was a lead they held until the end, picking up thre comfortable points.

Wanderers have now taken only two points from the last twenty seven available, and fail to score for four hundred and ninety five minutes.

Fourth place Felixstowe and Walton United have made their home a fortress. Thirteen home matches in league and cups prior to last night had delivered thirteen victories, so visitors Redbridge had a big challenge awaiting them- and it was a challenge they couldn’t cope with as the Seasiders winning home run increased to fourteen with a comfortable victory.

Rob Harvey put the hosts ahead on thirteen minutes with his first goal for the club, and on the half hour Charlie Warren’s twentieth of the campaign- in twenty three matches- made it two. After the break Sam Ford (pictured) got in on the act, and delivered a double on sixty seven and seventy nine minutes to ensure that his side picked up a sixth consecutive win- and climb to third. Cambridge City welcomed Concord Rangers to St Ives Town, and got back to winning ways. Both goals came rather early, Beau Masters-MacDonald giving City the lead after just three minutes, his first for the club, and Samrai Gebrai adding a second on seventeen. City climb to fiftenth, whilst the Beachboys make it seven matches without a win in League and Cup, and are ahead of their hosts only on goal difference.

Premier Division Wingate and Finchley have been in superb form, but much the same could be said about their opponents in the Velocity Cup, North Division promotion chasers Tilbury- and the Blues ended the night as slain giants! It looked as if the hosts would be too strong for the Dockers after Ryan Lowe gave them an early lead, but Tilbury are nothing if not resilient, very much in the running for the title of comeback kings, and they did it again. As usual the architect of their victory was Alex Hernandez. The number nine got their equaliser on fifty seven minutes, and then ten minutes from time got what proved to be the winner, taking his tally as a Docker to a quite remarkable eleven goals- in eleven matches. Tilbury have never lost when he has scored.

Tilbury have a similar trek in the next round, as they travel to Hendon.
